Not a single afternoon but a long campaign — collecting, sorting, and handing out blankets and warm clothing across Atlanta from January through August.
Most of our albums cover a morning. This one covers eight months.
From January to August 2023, Sprinkling Smiles ran a rolling blanket and warm-clothing drive across Atlanta: collecting donations from families, sorting them, and getting them directly into the hands of people sleeping outside. Because it ran across seasons, it worked differently from a one-day event — donations came in continuously, and distribution happened whenever there was enough to hand out.
The cover photograph shows the team in a downtown park with bare winter trees behind them, holding up Sprinkling Smiles shirts, bundled in coats and scarves. Nearly twenty people, spanning at least three generations.
A blanket is a strange kind of donation. It is not consumed like a meal, and one good one can carry somebody through an entire winter. It also does not need to be new to be worth giving, which means an ordinary family clearing out a closet can make a genuine difference without spending anything.
That is the whole idea behind the drive, and the reason it ran for eight months rather than one weekend.
