The best photograph from February 19, 2023 is not a group shot. It is a close-up of plates being handed across a folding table — white rice, a generous ladle of yellow curry over the top, a piece of bread balanced on the side.
Behind the table are three volunteers in heavy winter coats, hoods up, working a pair of Instant Pots and a tray of rice. Downtown Atlanta is grey and half-empty behind them.
It is worth pausing on what that plate actually is. It is not a sandwich handed out of a box. It is hot, home-cooked food, made in somebody's kitchen that morning, with proper portions and a second helping available if you want it. For someone eating outdoors on a February afternoon, the difference between those two things is enormous.
This is the standard the team has held to since 2020: cook real food, keep it hot, serve it with both hands, and give people the dignity of a plate rather than a handout.
Cold day, hot plate, no shortcuts.
