Independence Day weekend, when most of Atlanta was at a cookout. This group cooked for somebody else instead.
July 3, 2023 fell on the Monday of the Independence Day long weekend β prime cookout territory, and about the least likely morning to get a dozen volunteers to show up anywhere at 9am.
They showed up.
The group photo from that day has everyone in bright summer colours β magenta and yellow Sprinkling Smiles polos, red shirts, kurtas, sunglasses β lined up outside before heading out to serve. It looks like a family function, which is more or less what these have become.
Holiday weekends are a genuinely important time to run a drive. Regular services and kitchens often close or run reduced hours, so the people who depend on them have fewer options on exactly the days everyone else is celebrating.
One long weekend, one morning given up, a lot of people fed. A fair trade.
