During Shraadh, families remember those they have lost by offering food. Our community took that tradition out of the home and onto the street.
In the Shraadh period — the fortnight Hindus set aside to remember their ancestors — the central act is an offering of food made in a departed person's name. It is one of the oldest ideas in the tradition: you honour the dead by feeding someone.
On Saturday, September 28, 2024, the Sprinkling Smiles families in Atlanta observed it exactly that way. Instead of the ritual ending at the dining table, the food was cooked in volume, carried downtown, and served to people in Woodruff Park who had no one cooking for them that day.
Several volunteers were serving in memory of a specific parent or grandparent. They did not make a public announcement of it — you would only know if you asked. But it is why the mood at these particular drives is different: quieter at the start, warmer by the end.
The photograph that came out of that morning is a grinning selfie with the whole group crowded in behind, a meal box held up in the middle of the frame. It is not a solemn picture. That feels right.
Grief and service fit together more naturally than people expect. This is a tradition worth keeping, and worth keeping outdoors.
