No occasion, no anniversary, no holiday. Just a Saturday in July, a line of people, and enough hot food to go around.
Not every drive has a story attached to it. Some are simply the first Saturday of the month, and the food still has to get cooked.
July 6, 2024 was one of those. Volunteers set up at Woodruff Park with hot vegetarian meals, bagged sides, and coolers of cold water against the Georgia summer. The line formed the way it always does — quickly, and longer than you expect.
What the photographs from this one capture well is the ordinary texture of a serving morning: a volunteer in a pink Sprinkling Smiles tee crouched over the food table, someone being handed a spoon, teenagers carrying supplies, neighbours waiting and chatting. Nobody is posing.
These unremarkable Saturdays are the actual backbone of the work. The birthday drives and festival drives get the photographs and the write-ups; the plain monthly ones are what make us a fixture rather than an event.
If you have been meaning to come out to one, come to a plain one. There is always a job.
