Vaachi's Birthday, Served Hot on a Cold January Street

Sprinkling Smiles January 19, 2025 Downtown Atlanta, GA

Woolly hats, gloved hands, and a pot of curry steaming into the January air on Peachtree Street. Vaachi picked a cold day to be generous on.

January in downtown Atlanta is not the easy season to stand outside and serve food. It is, however, the season when a hot meal counts for the most.

On Sunday, January 19, 2025, Vaachi celebrated her birthday on Peachtree Street with a folding table, a red tablecloth, a tray of rice, and a pot of curry kept steaming against the cold. The photographs from that morning show three young volunteers in winter coats and knit hats, grinning behind the food, gloves on, doing the actual work.

For the people who came through the line, the warmth was the point twice over β€” once in the food, once in the fact that somebody had chosen to be out there in that weather for them.

The team packed up with cold hands and empty trays, which is exactly how these mornings are supposed to end.

Many happy returns, Vaachi. You picked a cold day and made it warmer.
