A bright, freezing Sunday in downtown Atlanta, a team in puffer jackets and beanies, and hot food going out to people with nowhere warm to be.
There is a photo from January 21, 2024 that sums the day up: fifteen or so volunteers packed together on a downtown Atlanta sidewalk, squinting into hard winter sun, every one of them in a puffer jacket, beanie, or both. Somebody is kneeling in front in a long black coat. Everyone is laughing.
It was a cold, cloudless Sunday, and the team served hot food downtown the way they do every month regardless of the forecast.
Winter drives run differently. Food has to be kept hot in transit and served fast. Volunteers rotate more often because hands get cold. And the conversations are shorter and more urgent, because for the people in that line the cold is not an inconvenience to be photographed — it is the whole problem.
That is also why the team keeps showing up in January instead of waiting for spring. The months when volunteering is least comfortable are the months when it counts most.
Warm food, cold morning, good day's work.
